At Esher Church School, our school uniform plays an important role in fostering our Christian value of Community. By wearing a shared uniform, children develop a strong sense of belonging and identity as members of our school family. Uniform helps to promote equality, reduces unnecessary pressures around clothing choices and supports a positive learning environment where children can focus on flourishing academically, socially and spiritually.
In line with Department for Education guidance, we are committed to ensuring that our uniform is practical, affordable and accessible for all families. To minimise costs, compulsory branded items have been kept to a minimum, and the ECSA supports families through termly second-hand uniform sales. Together, these approaches help us to create an inclusive community where every child feels valued, confident and ready to learn.
Branded Uniform Items
The only compulsory branded items are:
Key Stage 1
- School jumper or cardigan
- School PE top
Key Stage 2
- School jumper or cardigan
- School tie
- School PE top
Parents may also choose to purchase optional branded items, such as book bags, if they wish.

- Grey trousers, shorts, skirt or pinafore dress
- White polo shirt
- School jumper or cardigan
- Grey or white socks
- Grey tights (if worn)
- Red and white gingham checked summer dress (optional)
Key Stage 2
- Grey trousers, shorts, skirt or pinafore dress
- White shirt
- School tie
- School jumper or cardigan
- Grey or white socks
- Grey tights (if worn)
- Red and white gingham checked summer dress (optional)
PE Uniform
All children should wear:
- School PE top
- Black shorts, skort or leggings
- Suitable footwear for physical activity
Hair, Jewellery and Accessories
To support safety, presentation and readiness for learning:
- Hair that is shoulder length or longer must be tied back.
- Hair accessories should be small, practical and in school colours.
- Small stud earrings may be worn.
- Earrings must not be worn on PE days.
- Hoop earrings and other jewellery are not permitted. Children wearing these items will be asked to remove them.
Swimming
Children take part in swimming during the summer term and will need:
- A swimming costume or swimming trunks
- A towel
- A swimming hat
Parents will be informed of specific arrangements by their child’s year group.
Second-Hand Uniform
As part of our commitment to affordability and sustainability, the ECSA runs termly second-hand uniform sales. These events provide families with an opportunity to purchase good-quality uniform at reduced cost while supporting our school community and reducing waste.
Details of upcoming sales will be shared through regular school communications.

Transition to Our Updated Uniform
As we introduce our updated uniform requirements, we recognise that many families already have existing uniform items. In the spirit of our value of Community, and to support affordability and sustainability, we will be adopting a phased approach to these changes.
Children in Key Stage 1 who currently have red and white gingham checked shirts may continue to wear them. Similarly, children who already have a team-coloured PE top may continue to wear this for PE lessons.
Families are not expected to replace items that are still in good condition. We encourage parents to make changes as items naturally need replacing, helping to reduce unnecessary costs and minimise waste. This approach reflects our commitment to ensuring that school uniform remains affordable, practical and inclusive for all members of our school community.
This transition period will allow families time to move to the updated uniform expectations while continuing to ensure that children feel proud, comfortable and part of the Esher Church School community.
