Reception

In Reception our classes are named after the authors Roger Hargreaves and Mick Inkpen.

Hargreaves is taught by Mrs Hamper and Mrs Jones.  Inkpen is taught by Miss Fairhall.

The year group is supported by Mrs de la Touche, Mrs Sebastik and Mrs Pearson.

In Reception we support the children as they settle into school life. We introduce the children to phonics and teach them the early reading, writing and maths skills needed for the rest of their school life. We also support their personal and social, physical and expressive development, through a range of child and teacher led activities. A highlight of the children’s year is the meeting and developing relationships with their big friends from Year 6.

Each week, we send home a couple of reading books with the children as well as handwriting for the sounds covered that week. These will be added to the children’s class Microsoft Teams and the website under Home Learning, Reception. Alongside this the children will be learning their ECCB words by sight. These will be updated as you child progresses.

Autumn Term

In September, we settle the children into school with our daily routines. This half term, we meet out big friends.

After half term, we learn about Remembrance by creating our own poppies from a range of resources and Diwali through Rangoli patterns and creating firework painting, which also helps us with learning about Guy Fawkes for Bonfire Night.

Nearer Christmas, we look at the Nativity story and act out the events in our own film which we share with the ECS community and parents, singing Nativity nursey rhyme songs. We also take a trip to RHS Wisley to enjoy Christmas crafts.

Spring Term

In January, we look at different people who help keep us safe including various keyworkers. We meet Smartie the Penguin and learn how to stay safe in an online world.

This half term we learnt about different cultures including Chinese New Year.

After half term, we look at the Easter story, meaning of Easter eggs and bake Easter nests. We look at the signs of Spring as the season changes and continue to do this into Summer.

Summer Term

In the first weeks of the Summer Term, we look at how to care for environment by learning how we can reduce, reuse and recycle. In RE, we look at key individuals from the Old Testament including Moses, David, Noah and Daniel. We read Bible stories and learn songs to better understand this part of the Bible.

After half term, we learn about the life cycle of ladybirds and/or butterflies and observe them through this process in the classroom.

In June, we visit Nower Wood, looking and exploring nature and pond life. In July, we become Year 1 detectives in order to better prepare us for moving up to our new classes.Aut 1 Big Enquiry Web Reception
